My teacher shakti durga translates the Gayatri mantra like this:
“The source of all creation, through all realms, physical, mental and spritual, that mystical light I praise thee, I meditate on your light, please illuminate my mind.”
This is a break down of each Sanskri word:
- oṃ – The sacred syllable, praṇava;
- bhūr – The earth;
- bhuvaḥ – The atmosphere;
- svaḥ – The heaven;
- tat – that;
- savituḥ – of Savitṛ (Sun god);
- vareṇyam – best amongst;
- bhargaḥ – Splendour;
- devasya – of the devas (Gods);
- dhīmahi – May we meditate;
- dhiyaḥ – Buddhi (Intellect);
- yaḥ – he who;
- naḥ – Our;
- pracodayāt: shall lead.
